ESSENCES OF LONDON TRENDS
  • 43% of Londoners named food smells as the most notable smells in London, of which 32% associate the smell of London with the smell of curry
  • 43% of Londoners strongly associated the smell of London with pollution
  • 25% of men interviewed highlighted a girlfriend or wife's perfume as their most memorable smell association
  • 19% of people interviewed about the association between smell and memory talked about their mothers, and 15% of people talked about their grandparents
  • 16% of people interviewed mentioned the smell of flowers, of which 25% of those named lavender (often in relation to grandmothers)
  • 5% of people interviewed about smell associations talked about parenthood, 25% of which were male and 75% of which were female: men talked about dirty nappies, body lotion and nit shampoo, whilst women talked about the special smell particular to the child itself

Note: interviewees were asked what smells they associated with London, what smells might trigger a feeling of nostalgia and what smells reminded them of home. Many people responded to the questions with more than one answer, thus the percentages below represent what percentage of people mentioned smells in the following categories (and don't therefore necessarily add up to 100%).
